Journalism, Authoritarianism and Post-Truth Politics: The Medyascope Experience in Turkey

Since 2012, Turkey has experienced the consolidation of an authoritarian regime under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The president and his close circle have established a direct control over most Turkish newspapers and TV channels. Today, there are only a few media outlets in Turkey, which are not under the direct supervision or patronage of the Erdogan establishment. Medyascope is one of these alternative venues, streaming online with the financial support of its followers. Medyascope covers a wide range of topics, from alternative political and economic news to the news on arts, urban life, environment, children, LGBTQ, and sports.

Ruşen Çakır, a prominent journalist in Turkey and founder of Medyascope, will speak on Turkish media and journalism in the age of authoritarian post-truth politics under the light of the Medyascope experience.
